Hey gang! Do you ever find yourself in a situation where because of where you are- you end up eating something that you normally wouldn’t even entertain? You know -eating just because you’re THERE and it’s part of the whole experience?
For example – you’re at the movie theatre and suddenly find that that you HAVE TO HAVE popcorn or milk duds- because you’re there, or you’re at the restaurant that is known for their mouth watering cheesecake- so of course, Well I’m here, so I HAVE to have a slice, or maybe it’s a Birthday party and there’s cake that you find yourself mindlessly eating because everyone else is so…
So let’s talk about it!! We’ve all run into that from time to time, right? I mean – let’s be honest here! Have you or have you not EVER found yourself eating something, and then thought ‘Man, I didn’t even want that thing.’
Tactic: Mindset – first and foremost
First of all it really comes down to mindset.
Mindset about our choices and mindset about abundance over lack. Releasing feelings of missing out.
Understanding that the movie theater popcorn is ALWAYS gonna be there. You can have dessert ANYTIME you want.
Being more mindful of your choices. Do you really want that thing or is it more situational eating?
Going into settings with a lean mindset – you know what your choices are going to be. If you are wishy washy about your standards well…then..you probably won’t stay true to the quality choices that are going to get you to your goals.
A lean mindset goes into a restaurant knowing what she is going to order. She doesn’t mull over the menu for consideration. She just knows the kind of choices she will make.
It’s about becoming conscious of our choices and really starting to change our habits and change how we view things.
But we also want to live our life, right!? We don’t want to feel like we are so restricted that we feel constantly deprived resulting in a binge episode. Or even feeling shame or guilt over our food choices.
So how do we have our cake and eat it too? Well- I argue that the trick is to both EAT your cake and HAVE it too….and you can with this next tactic.
Tactic: One Bite Rule
Great for parties or restaurants
Practice a one bite rule or hell, maybe a two bite rule..(you see where I’m going here right?) Allow yourself a small pre-emptive strike so that you still get to enjoy the experience. Have a small taste and and yet NOT derail all your efforts. Now if you’re saying ‘Ca’Mon Kim! I can’t just have one bite! It’s all or nothing!’ I challenge you.
Challenge you to practice these methods. It may not be easy at first and iIt may take time to build this habit. You will have slip ups and deviations- but you will get there! Let’s take back control! I hate when FOOD controls me. It’s insane and we need to stop being slaves to it.
Tactic: Bring Your Own
At the movies, why can’t you sneak in your own air popped popcorn or ‘healthified’ snack to avoid the garbage at the concession stand? Part of the charm at the movie theatre is watching the teasers for new releases and having some awesome snacks to munch on, right? Now you can do it without feeling bloated and uncomfortable from all the sugar and salt you just took in.
In the end it’s all about being mindful of our choices. We must DECIDE what we want our habits to be and then make them happen. Some are easier than others. Some will require PRACTICE. There will be deviations – but it’s not failure- just feedback.
It’s about not allowing FOOD to have so much control over us. It’s about getting to a spot where good choices are effortless. You don’t feel that you HAVE to eat it because you are there. Where you can take it or leave it.
Thanks for tuning in!
