Getting comfortable with the uncomfortable…
My business coach asked me a very direct question today and I was pretty much at a loss for words. She asked ‘Why aren’t you charging what you are worth?’
Honestly- I couldn’t answer it. I stammered a bit and gave some lame answer…
But it’s a great question- and obviously one I needed to be asked. I mean hell- there is enormous value in what I provide, quite frankly, life changing value!
Maybe because I enjoy it so much? I feel bad getting paid and loving what I do..?
My background is corporate finance- I have either held miserable jobs or worked my butt off to climb that corporate ladder. Maybe I have a misconception that decent compensation only comes from arduous work. Perhaps it’s the years of being conditioned to just accept the gender pay gap.
Demographics prove that in 2013 among full-time, year-round workers, women were paid 78 percent of what men were paid. That gap has not budged as of 2015. It happens in every state and in every industry- some worse than others- and especially to women of color.
As for female business owners who under value their work- I know I’m not alone here. I hazard to guess that it’s more common for women to charge less than they are worth than it is for men.
So ladies- are you charging what you are worth? If not, what is holding you back? It’s definitely got me digging deep. Time to peel back the layers. Know your worth. #selfworth #value #respectyourself
