Do you ever have something that’s working out pretty well, but you decide to make it even BETTER and it turns into a big fat failure?
Could be like that favorite recipe you have and you decide to kick it up a notch and NO – just NO.
Or maybe it’s a spreadsheet that you’ve been using and you decide to make it more efficient and you break the whole damn thing?
How about a schedule that seems to be working out rather well, and you decide to change it up so you can fit in EVEN more projects and you find yourself hating life… ‘What was I thinking!?’
Well that’s what happened to me recently- I decided to change up my workout schedule so I could fit in more projects in the evening! What a flop!
It all looked great on paper!! Up at 4am- workout at 515am, home, shower, create content, go to the office and have those extra 2 evenings available to host specialty events or a group class- or just chill out and relax. It’s been ages since I’ve done a live event and was hoping to get some back on the books.
So my new schedule started around the holidays.. and it was great. Everything was working out. I was getting to bed early and able to get up and get out the door the next morning. I found a great strength training class that was close to my house (Shaunna Wildman- you kickass woman!! You and your class are my heroes maintaining that schedule!!)
I was super productive in the morning and had energy throughout the day. I thought I was good and decided I could really make it work… So I made the decision to give it a try for a few months. Get a solid schedule down for my new evening project and then work back into some of my regular Bootcamp classes in the evening.
Well after the holiday break everything started ramping up. Some new evening courses I enrolled in and planned for an hour actually run closer to 90 minutes or longer. Coaching sessions fired back up 830-930 pm. Conference calls for new business launches kicking off- 9pm…
Anyone see the problem?
If not – let me tell you. When I get up at 4am on a regular basis- I need to be in bed by 830pm LATEST. Physically, I can barely make it to 830pm. Let me tell you -I was not a nice person.
And guess what the first thing to suffer was-
YOU Got it- the WORKOUTS!!! YUP There were many days I was getting up at 4am- but was still not getting out the door to class. ‘No biggie- I’ll workout at home’.. I told myself. And I did… sometimes..but let me tell you- there was a LOT of procrastination going on. So….the workouts were inconsistent and thus not effective…*sigh*…
Honestly, I could have easily dragged out another month with good intentions to get it all worked out. Stay up late on this night- get up early on these days only…yada yada. You know what? – I know myself. Wasn’t gonna happen. So as any good coach does- we measure, monitor and adjust. It was time to cut it off at the knees. I had to recognize what was going on and make the call. Lesson here is that, while change is good and getting out of our comfort zones is the thing that keeps us moving forward- recognizing when things aren’t serving you and being willing to let them go is just as powerful. I am not willing to let my workouts suffer. They are the one thing that keeps me sane and feeling great. I clearly don’t LOVE working out- cuz otherwise I’d have no problem working out at home…but I do LOVE the feeling afterwards and how great my body looks when I’m treating it right.
Can anyone out there relate?
If so- share this with your friends. Maybe there’s a lesson in it for them too!!
